Alterac Mountains (Classic)

Rising high above the Hillsbrad lowlands, the Alterac Mountains are a harsh realm of rain, pine, and high-altitude snow. Once anchored by three major human powers—the mountain kingdom of Alterac, the magocracy of Dalaran, and the fortified town of Strahnbrad—the region collapsed under betrayal and war. Today, the ruined capital of Alterac is squatted by the Crushridge ogres, Strahnbrad is occupied by outlaws, and among the shattered remnants of Dalaran its surviving wizards work tirelessly to restore their ruined sanctuary.

Beyond the indigenous mountain lions and yeti that stalk the frostbitten ridges, the uplands are contested by desperate mortal factions. The Syndicate—dispossessed human nobles turned brigands—wield blade and ambush from old estates and foothill encampments, clashing incessantly with the encroaching ogres. Meanwhile, deep passes leading into the high crags serve as staging camps for the bloody war between the Stormpike Expedition and the Frostwolf Clan over the hidden reaches of Alterac Valley.
