Ruins of Thaurissan
The Ruins of Thaurissan are the scorched remnants of the Dark Iron clan's original surface capital in the Burning Steppes. Once a proud city nestled in the lush northern reaches of the Redridge Mountains, it was blasted to cinders during the War of the Three Hammers when Sorcerer-Thane Thaurissan inadvertently summoned the Firelord, Ragnaros.
The Fall of a Kingdom
Roughly two centuries ago, following their exile from Ironforge after the death of High King Modimus Anvilmar, the Dark Iron clan journeyed south and established Thaurissan City. At the climax of the War of the Three Hammers, facing total defeat by the combined forces of the Bronzebeard and Wildhammer clans, Sorcerer-Thane Thaurissan sought an ultimate weapon to turn the tide. He and seven trusted sorcerers channeled ancient magic deep beneath the earth. Instead of an obedient servant, their ritual ripped open a conduit to the Elemental Plane and summoned Ragnaros the Firelord. The cataclysmic eruption shattered the surrounding mountains, burned the verdant landscape into the ashen Burning Steppes, raised the volcano of Blackrock Mountain, and incinerated the city.
