WoW Forever Priest Beginner Guide: Healing, Shadow and Leveling

The Priest is a cloth-wearing healer and ranged caster, and Warcraft Tavern's beta leveling guide recommends a wand-focused Discipline build for solo play. You level slowly as a pure healer, so most people use Smite, Shadow Word: Pain and a wand, and keep healing for dungeons. Gnome Priests are new in Forever.

Quick answer: To level alone, play Discipline and use your wand. Cast Smite on pull, keep Power Word: Shield up, add Shadow Word: Pain when mana allows, and finish with the wand. Choose Holy if you plan to run many dungeons, and Shadow if you want damage without healing.

The Priest's three specializations
Spec roles and key spell levels, from Warcraft Tavern's beta Priest guides.

Who can be a Priest

Priests are available to Human, Dwarf, Night Elf, Gnome, Undead and Troll characters. Gnome Priest is a new combination in Forever. See the race and class guide for the full list.

Warcraft Tavern says Night Elf "seems to be the most strong as it stands" because of Starshards and Elune's Light, and that Undead "seems to be the strongest right now" on the Horde side because of Touch of the Grave. Both are beta-era opinions, and the guide itself hedges them. It says Troll is the usual Horde pick, but that Haste matters less in Forever, which weakens Berserking.

The three specializations

  • Discipline: usually a secondary tree for Holy and Shadow builds. Going deep gives Power Infusion. For leveling, Warcraft Tavern's beta guide recommends it as the main wand-focused build, and says Penance becomes available at level 30.
  • Holy: the dedicated healer, with Prayer of Mending as its capstone and mana-recovery talents such as Litany of Light. The leveling guide recommends it if you plan to run dungeons for a good part of your leveling, and says leveling mainly as a healer is not recommended because of slow kill times.
  • Shadow: a ranged damage spec. The leveling guide says it does not shine until about level 28 unless you have decent spell power, and that Shadowform comes at level 40. Shadow Word: Death is in the beta builds, and Shadowform has been revamped to raise Shadow critical strike chance and lower Shadow spell mana cost.

Key spells by level

Warcraft Tavern lists these unlocks:

  • Level 1: Power Word: Fortitude, Smite, Lesser Heal
  • Level 4: Shadow Word: Pain
  • Level 6: Power Word: Shield
  • Level 8: Renew, Fade
  • Level 10: Mind Blast, Resurrection and the first set of racial spells
  • Level 14: Psychic Scream, Cure Disease
  • Level 20: Flash Heal, Holy Fire, Holy Nova and Devouring Plague
  • Level 30: Penance, Prayer of Healing, Divine Spirit, Mind Control
  • Level 40: Shadowform, Power Infusion, Greater Heal, Prayer of Mending

Fear Ward and Devouring Plague are now spells instead of racial abilities.

A simple leveling routine

Before you have talents, cycle between Smite and Lesser Heal until you get your first wand, then lean on the wand. After that, the guide's Discipline routine is:

  1. Keep Power Word: Shield up when mana allows, so enemy hits do not interrupt your casts.
  2. Cast Smite on pull.
  3. Cast Shadow Word: Pain when mana allows.
  4. After level 30, use Penance for extra damage or self-healing.
  5. Finish the target with your wand, or let the damage-over-time spell do it.

Keep Power Word: Fortitude on yourself at all times.

Wands and mana

Wands deal high damage while leveling, and early wands now carry Spell Power. The guide lists a Lesser Magic Wand at level 5 and a Greater Magic Wand at level 13, both from Enchanting, plus a Sizzle Stick at level 15 (Wailing Caverns quest), a Gravestone Scepter at level 18 (Blackfathom Depths quest) and the Wand of Eventide at level 27 (bind-on-equip world drop).

For mana, prioritize Spirit on gear, carry water for your level and a few mana potions, and eat cooked food for the experience buff. Warcraft Tavern's stat list for healers is Healing Power, Intellect, MP5, Spirit, then Critical Strike. Spell ranks matter too: monitor them to find heals that cost less mana.

What is different in Forever

  • Crit and Hit apply to all attack types, weapon skill is replaced by Expertise and Haste is a new secondary stat.
  • Vampiric Touch is missing from the known spell list.
  • Cloth only: Priests use daggers, one-handed maces, staves and wands, with no shields or relics.
  • Professions: Enchanting and Tailoring are recommended for leveling gear and wands. Tailoring has new patterns, including level 10 belts that affect Spell Power. See the professions guide.

Movement is a Priest weakness, so plant your feet to finish casts. The free Lore Forever add-on is fan-made and does not change how the class plays, but it adds readable background for the zones you pass through while leveling.

What is still uncertain

Warcraft Tavern's builds were written for the beta, which is capped at level 30, and say level 60 builds will be added at launch. The guide says it is "too early to say" how balance will turn out at end game, and describes several racial assessments with hedged language. Its Discipline healing assessment is assumed rather than measured.
