How to Reserve Your Name in WoW Forever: Oct 27 to Nov 3
To reserve a character name in World of Warcraft: Forever (WoW Forever), you must have pre-purchased an upgrade pack, then create up to three characters in the game between October 27 and November 3, 2026. Blizzard says names go first-come, first-served and that "desired names cannot be guaranteed."
Quick answer: Install WoW: Forever from the Game Version menu in Battle.net, press Play, choose a ruleset and create your characters. Kotaku reports that a subscription alone does not qualify, and the limit of three counts every ruleset together.

A name is the first thing a stranger learns about you on the road out of a starting valley. In WoW Forever it is also a small race, because each first and last name pairing can belong to only one adventurer in a region.

Who can reserve a name in WoW Forever?
Only players who bought an upgrade. Blizzard's announcement names the Skyborne Heroic Pack, the Skyborne Epic Pack and the limited-time Warcraft Forever Collection, and says the benefit applies only to the specific WoW account the purchase was made for. A footnote on the same page is worded differently: "Purchase of World of Warcraft: Forever Digital Upgrade or Collector's Edition required." TechRadar (October 22) lists the Digital Upgrade and Collector's Edition alongside the three packs as eligible; Warcraft Tavern (October 20) says only "upgrade packs." The sources I opened do not explain how the footnote and the pack list fit together. Kotaku reported on October 27 that players relying on an existing subscription cannot reserve names. One source, kami-labs, citing Method and Blizzard Watch, says beta access alone did not qualify either. For what each pack contains, see the editions guide and the early name reservation guide.
How do you reserve a name step by step?
Blizzard lists the road in order. Update your graphics drivers, install the Battle.net desktop app and let it update, then select World of Warcraft in the game list. In the Game Version menu above the Play button choose World of Warcraft: Forever and install it. When the install finishes, press Play, choose your ruleset and create up to three characters with the names you want.
How many names can you reserve, and in which ruleset?
Three in total, however you spread them. Blizzard's own example is that two characters on a PvP ruleset leave room for only one more on Normal or Role-Play, and the limit applies only to early reservation. Blizzard's reservation article names Normal, Role-Play and PvP; its ruleset article, updated October 22, adds that Roleplay-PvP arrives with launch and will also be available with Early Name Reservation, while Hardcore comes "sometime after launch." Each name has two parts, and the pairing must be unique inside the region, per Blizzard's naming article. Our rulesets guide explains the choice, and the character name rules list lengths and blocked names.
What happened with the European opening?
On October 27 the road opened late for some. Kotaku reported a technical issue that kept European players from reserving, and mein-mmo said reservation was postponed with no new time. UrGameTips posted at 19:40 UTC that reservation was working after an "unavailable ruleset" message, and a Wowhead update says the delay is complete and players can reserve on EU and NA. As of October 29, 2026, those four reports are the evidence I found. If a name is refused with "That name is restricted," read the name-check fix before retrying.
What is not confirmed yet
- How the footnote (Digital Upgrade or Collector's Edition) relates to the three named packs: Blizzard's page does not explain it.
- What happens to a reserved name that is never used: Warcraft Tavern, Gfinity and kami-labs do not say, and no source I opened shows it.
- The closing time on November 3: Blizzard's article gives the date only.
- Whether the October 27 name-check bug is fixed in every region.
