You pick up a fractured piece of the rock-mech automaton. It has a texture unlike anything you've touched before, a composite material of unknown makeup. This is certainly bound to be more 'device' than 'debris.'
Prospector Whelgar himself at his excavation site might have something useful to share about the relic.
