WoW Forever Race Unlocks: Which Races Are Locked and Why

In World of Warcraft: Forever (WoW Forever), the only race documented as needing an unlock is the Skyborne, and the documented requirement is buying the Skyborne Heroic Pack or a higher edition, not completing an achievement. No source reviewed for this guide describes an achievement that unlocks any race in Forever.

Quick answer: If you meet the message about completing an achievement to unlock a race, first note which race it is. For the Skyborne, a pack purchase is the known key. For an original race, nothing published explains the lock, so try the beta workaround below and then ask Blizzard Support.

What gates a race in WoW Forever
A four-row ledger: the eight original races have no published unlock; the Skyborne need the Skyborne Heroic Pack or higher; Legacy points unlock a toy, a pet, a tabard and a mount, not races; no achievement that unlocks a race is documented.

Every gate has a keeper, and every keeper has a ledger. In Forever the ledger is short, and most of its pages are blank. Before you blame the screen, find your line in it.

Which races need an unlock in WoW Forever?

Only the Skyborne do, as far as published sources show. Blizzard's races and classes announcement lists eight original races, four for each faction, plus the Skyborne as the new race. Blizzard's edition announcement attaches "Access to the new Skyborne race and their Zephras Isle starting experience" to the Heroic Pack, and the Epic Pack and Warcraft Forever Collection include it. Warcraft Tavern reports Blizzard's wording as requiring the Heroic Pack "or higher edition."

No source lists a pack, achievement or other requirement for the eight original races. See the race and class combinations guide and the Skyborne unlock tutorial.

Does an achievement unlock a race in WoW Forever?

No published rule says so. Blizzard's Skyborne introduction, edition announcement and Legacy announcement describe no achievement tied to a race, and the lock text players see at character creation is not documented.

The phrase itself has one trace. On September 17, 2026, a player in Blizzard's beta forum wrote that only Human was selectable and that clicking Finish produced a message about completing an achievement to unlock a race. The post garbles the message's wording, so its exact text is unknown. The player later reported that switching the character's sex to female and back to male made the other races appear. No Blizzard reply appears in the thread. Warcraft Wiki notes that the Allied Races of the modern game once required an achievement, and it lists the Skyborne as a core race, not an allied one.

How do the Legacy system and editions relate to race unlocks?

The editions are the known gate. The Legacy system is not. According to Blizzard, Legacy is an account-wide progression track with 65 challenges and one Legacy Point per challenge. Its launch rewards are the Replica Ironforge Air Rifle toy, the Spectral Bear Cub pet, the Spectral Bear Tabard and the Reins of the Spectral Bear mount. Blizzard says more rewards will come with content updates, and has not said what they will be. Read the Legacy system guide and the editions guide for the full lists.

Is another lock hiding behind the character-creation screen?

Yes, a different one. Blizzard says players choose a ruleset before creating a character, and on the PvP ruleset a player can create characters for only one faction. Creating an Alliance character there blocks Horde characters, and the reverse. Normal, Roleplaying and Hardcore rulesets allow both factions. Blizzard also plans population balancing, modeled on Season of Discovery. Icy Veins infers a possible temporary limit on the larger faction. See rulesets explained.

What should you do if a race will not unlock?

  1. Check the race. If it is Skyborne, the Heroic Pack or higher is the documented requirement, and the Battle.net Shop is where Blizzard directs pack purchases.
  2. If it is an original race, check your ruleset. On the PvP ruleset the other faction's races may be blocked by the one-faction rule.
  3. If only one race shows, try the beta forum player's workaround: switch the character's sex and back. This is one unofficial report.
  4. If none of these applies, ask Blizzard Support, because no public source explains the message further.

The free Lore Forever add-on does not unlock any race.

What is not confirmed yet

  • The in-game wording of the lock message is not documented.
  • Whether any other race will ever need an achievement is not stated.
  • Blizzard's edition page lists Skyborne as a pack benefit but does not say outright that nothing else unlocks it.
  • The sex-toggle fix is one beta player's report.
