WoW Forever Paladin Talent Build: Best Leveling Spec and Skill Tree (1–30)

For leveling a Paladin in WoW Forever, Warcraft Tavern's beta guide advises spending your early talent points in the Retribution tree, even if you plan to tank dungeons with a one-hander and shield, and says this is typically better for the first 20 to 30 levels. Talent points start at level 10, and the beta's level 30 Paladin builds spend 26 points, which includes 5 free points from the Talented Legacy perk.

Quick answer: Level as Retribution with a two-hander when you fight alone. Switch to the Protection build when you want to pull about four enemies and clear them with Consecration. Treat Holy "Shockadin" as a niche option, because leveling mainly as a healer is not recommended. All of this comes from the beta, which stopped at level 30.

Paladin level 30 builds from Warcraft Tavern: Retribution with Seal of Command 0/0/26, Protection with Reckoning 0/26/0 and Holy with Holy Shock 26/0/0, plus key unlock levels 10, 20 and 30.

Key facts

  • First talent point: level 10 (Warcraft Tavern). The Talented perk can move it earlier; see talents explained.
  • Level 30 Retribution build: Seal of Command, 0/0/26 (Warcraft Tavern).
  • Level 30 Protection build: Reckoning, 0/26/0 (Warcraft Tavern).
  • Level 30 Holy build: Holy Shock, 26/0/0 (Warcraft Tavern).
  • Points: 26 are reached by level 30 with Legacy talents, or by level 35 without them (Warcraft Tavern). Mobalytics' plan spends 21 points.
  • Key unlocks: Seal of Fury, Lay on Hands and Blessing of Protection at 10; Consecration, Exorcism, Flash of Light and Blessing of Kings at 20; Divine Intervention and Seal of Light at 30 (Warcraft Tavern).
  • Respec fee: sources disagree. Allthings.how (September 21) lists 1 gold, then 5 gold, rising to a 50 gold cap; Warcraft Tavern (September 24) reports a temporary beta cost of 1 silver. The launch fee is unconfirmed.

Which talent tree should a Paladin level in first?

Warcraft Tavern's leveling guide says to spend early points in Retribution, even if you plan to use a one-hander and shield and tank dungeons. It says leveling as Protection or Retribution can both work well, depending mainly on preference. Retribution suits one-on-one fights with a large two-handed weapon, and Protection suits gathering about four enemies and clearing them with Consecration.

Mobalytics agrees on Retribution first, with a 21-point Retribution plan for levels 1 to 30. Method disagrees on the very first picks: its leveling build starts in the Holy tree with Divine Strength and then Improved Seals, and only then moves to Retribution for Holy Conduit and Pursuit of Justice. Method says Protection lacks early power upgrades. Read the Paladin beginner guide for seals, auras and blessings.

What is the Retribution leveling build?

Mobalytics lists this Retribution allocation: Deflection 5/5, Conviction 5/5, Vindication 3/3, Sanctified Judgement 3/3, Pursuit of Justice 2/2, Seal of Command 1/1, Sacred Arbiter 1/1 and 1 point in Vengeance. Warcraft Tavern's Seal of Command build uses many of the same talents, including Deflection, Sanctified Judgement, Conviction, Pursuit of Justice and Sacred Arbiter, which boosts Holy Strike. It also takes Holy Conduit, which Mobalytics describes as strong against Undead or Demons but leaves out of its plan. Its last 6 points go to Vengeance and Two-Handed Weapon Specialization, or to Champion of the Light or Repentance.

Warcraft Tavern's leveling guide says Repentance has niche use while leveling, and its talent page says Repentance is mainly for PvP. Method adds Sacred Arbiter if you have the Talented Legacy perk.

When does the Protection (Reckoning) build make sense?

Warcraft Tavern's Protection build takes Redoubt, Shield Specialization, Precision, Anticipation (not maxed), Improved Seal of Fury, Improved Righteous Fury, One-Handed Weapon Specialization, Swift Judgement, Templar's Bulwark and 4 points in Reckoning. Its talent page describes Seal of Fury as a real taunt and Templar's Bulwark as a defensive cooldown. The leveling guide calls Protection very tanky and able to pull large groups of enemies. Choose it when you tank dungeons or want to pull groups. See the tanks and healers guide.

Is Shockadin (Holy Shock) worth it for leveling?

Shockadin is Warcraft Tavern's 26-point Holy build. It uses Holy Shock as the pull opener and, per the guide, can provide surprising damage. The same guide says leveling as a healer is not recommended, and that Holy does not come online properly until Holy Shock is available. The build's optional picks include Voice of Truth and one point in Purifying Power, which the page ties to PvP. Treat Shockadin as a variety pick, not a default.

Can you change your Paladin build later?

Yes. Method suggests resetting after the leveling build and building toward your role (healer, tank or damage), noting that with 20 talents you have enough points for role-specific talents. Your class trainer in your race's capital city handles resets. The price has moved: allthings.how (updated September 21) lists 1 gold for the first reset, 5 gold for the second and a 50 gold cap, while Warcraft Tavern (September 24) says the beta cost is now 1 silver if you have not recently changed talents, and calls that temporary. The launch fee is unconfirmed. The free Lore Forever add-on adds zone and quest background while you level; it is fan-made.

What is not confirmed yet

  • The beta stopped at level 30. Warcraft Tavern says level 60 builds will be added at launch, and its stat priorities are not published yet.
  • The Protection and Shockadin leveling layouts in Warcraft Tavern's leveling guide are images, so exact point-by-point allocations could not be confirmed in text.
  • Mobalytics refers to a "level 20 cap" for part of its advice, which suggests parts of its page predate the level 30 beta cap.
  • Whether Holy Shock works as a damage spec at higher levels is unknown, and Warcraft Tavern says it is too early to say how Forever's balance changes will work out for the end-game.
  • Warcraft Tavern says the Undead racial Touch of the Grave could be very powerful, depending on how it interacts with the Paladin toolkit at later levels, and Mobalytics says its proc rate is not yet known.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Paladin talent build for leveling in WoW Forever?

Warcraft Tavern and Mobalytics both recommend starting in Retribution with a two-handed weapon. Warcraft Tavern's Seal of Command build uses 26 points at level 30, including 5 from Talented.

Can a Paladin tank dungeons while leveling in WoW Forever?

Yes. Warcraft Tavern says a Paladin can tank dungeons with a one-hander and shield while still spending early talent points in Retribution, and offers a Reckoning-based Protection build for larger pulls.

Is Holy a good Paladin leveling spec in WoW Forever?

Not as a pure healer. Warcraft Tavern says leveling as a healer is not recommended, though its Shockadin build uses Holy Shock for damage once that talent is available.

When do Paladins get their first talent point in WoW Forever?

Paladins earn their first talent point at level 10. The Talented Legacy perk can bring that earlier.

Should a Paladin take Repentance while leveling?

Warcraft Tavern says Repentance has niche use while leveling and is mainly for PvP, so it is optional rather than core.
