WoW Forever Rogue Talent Build: Best Leveling Spec and Skill Tree (1–30)
For leveling a Rogue in WoW Forever, Warcraft Tavern's beta guide gives four level 30 builds, describes Combat as a mix of a defensive and an offensive build, and says Assassination is generally not recommended as a starter build. Talent points start at level 10. Subtlety offers two level 30 variants, Ambush and Bleed Damage, and the guide says the Ambush version does not fare as well in dungeons. The guide does not rank the other builds against each other.
Quick answer: Level Combat if you want a mix of defense and offense and to kill one mob after another with little downtime. Pick Subtlety Ambush to one-shot enemies from stealth when you quest alone; Subtlety Bleed Damage is the other Subtlety variant. Assassination is not recommended as a starter build. These builds come only from the beta, which stopped at level 30.

Which talent tree should a Rogue level in?
Warcraft Tavern's leveling guide presents four level 30 builds. It describes Combat as "a mix of a defensive and offensive version" of the Combat Rogue build that boosts survivability. It says the Assassination build grows in power as you approach Mutilate and is generally not recommended as a starter build, and ties its identity to poisons. Subtlety splits into a stealth-opener playstyle (Ambush) and a bleed playstyle (Bleed Damage).
Method's beta guide also gives a Combat and an Assassination plan. See the full Rogue beginner guide for abilities and stealth basics.
What is the Combat leveling build?
Warcraft Tavern says Combat lets you kill one mob after another without worrying about downtime, thanks to Deflection and Riposte, and advises using Blade Flurry at the start of fights, single target or against several mobs. If you struggle to survive, it suggests Lightning Reflexes instead of Improved Eviscerate. Combat's first talents are Improved Sinister Strike and Improved Eviscerate.
Method plans it differently: it fully invests in Combat to reach Blade Flurry early, and puts the first two points into Remorseless Attacks until level 30. At level 30 it respecs to 4 of 5 Dual Wield Specialization and 1 Blade Flurry, taking Blade Flurry that way only if you have no extra Legacy points. Its later goals are Hack and Slash 5/5, Weapon Expertise 2/2, Aggression 3/3 and Adrenaline Rush. The two sources therefore disagree on the opening points.
Is Subtlety Ambush or Bleed Damage better?
Warcraft Tavern's Subtlety Ambush build aims to one-shot targets with stealth openers. Its guide says that in dungeons you cannot use Ambush in combat without Vanish until you have Cutthroat, a new talent for the Backstab and Ambush playstyle, so it advises prioritizing Slice and Dice and Expose Armor over Eviscerate in boss fights. The Bleed Damage build uses Expose Armor in dungeon boss fights when the group has several physical damage dealers. Warcraft Tavern's Subtlety 2/2/7 build opens with Ambush, enabled by Improved Ambush, and then uses Sinister Strike.
When does Assassination make sense?
Assassination in Forever gains Mutilate, a combo point generator that needs daggers, and Venom, a finishing move (Warcraft Tavern's talent page). Method's Assassination plan builds resources through Relentless Strikes, Ruthlessness and Improved Slice and Dice, prioritizes Sinister Strike, and switches to Mutilate once unlocked, moving both Sinister Strike points to Improved Eviscerate. Method adds that Backstab is easier to land in group content, with Sinister Strike as the fallback. The leveling tips guide covers general pacing.
Can you change your Rogue build later?
Yes. Your class trainer in your race's capital city resets talents. The price has moved: allthings.how (updated September 21) lists 1 gold for the first reset, 5 gold for the second and a 50 gold cap, while Warcraft Tavern (September 24) says the beta cost is now 1 silver if you have not recently changed talents, and calls that temporary. The launch fee is unconfirmed. Method's Combat plan assumes a respec at level 30. The free Lore Forever add-on shows zone and quest background as you level; it is fan-made.
What is not confirmed yet
- The beta stopped at level 30, and Warcraft Tavern says level 60 builds will be added at launch.
- Warcraft Tavern says it cannot yet list a definitive stat priority, and it is unknown whether the old meta will remain relevant.
- Warcraft Tavern calls the new poisons Sebacious, Occult, Atrophic and Numbing rumored and not completely confirmed in the beta.
- The talent layouts in Warcraft Tavern's leveling guide are images, so exact point allocations for levels 10 to 30 could not be confirmed in text.
- Method does not state a level cap, and does not give unlock levels for Mutilate or Venom or ranks for Adrenaline Rush and Venom.
